Innovation at MacDermid Autotype Limited means devising a new solution, a product or an application which stands out for its quality, safety and cost-effectiveness. Innovation at Autotype is leading edge science becoming applied technology. This ethos has been with us since 1874, when we invented a new printing method which revolutionised the world of visual communication.
These are some of the innovative solutions we have recently launched:
Precision Nano Replication (PNR)
Microstructures can be used in a variety of high specification applications such as micro lenses for clever optics, micro prisms for displays and daylighting applications, diffractive elements for laser systems and micro channels for medical diagnostic devices.
MacDermid Autotype Limited’s PNR technique is perfect for those who want real precision (down to the nm level) combined with large volumes (up to millions of sq m). In addition, MacDermid Autotype Limited can tailor the surface properties of the replicated structure. So if you need a hydrophobic micro prism or a hydrophilic micro channel, MacDermid Autotype Limited can provide it.
Microstructures can be replicated onto films such as PET, PC, PMMA, TAC with excellent adhesion to the substrate.
Our current key development product is the MARAG-HC. The MARAG-HC is a real alternative to conventional sputtered multi-layer AR films.
M is for moth eye – a special anti-reflection micro structure (originally seen in the eyes of moths who use it as a sort of stealth technology).
AR is for the Anti Reflection effect that the moth eye provides
AG is for an additional AntiGlare functionality built in to the surface to avoid residual specular reflection.
HC is for Hard Coat – so the MARAG is tough for real world use.
The moth eye and anti-glare structure is originated by our partners the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy in Freiburg, Germany.

In Mould Decoration (IMD) Formable Hardcoat Films
In Mould Decoration (IMD) requires formable hardcoats. But no single film can suit every application. MacDermid Autotype Limited has produced three films, each for a distinctive product range. For ultimate hardcoat and gentle forming, there’s Autoflex AutoForm. For a good balance of hardcoat and forming there is Autoflex HiForm. And for a deep draw there’s Autoflex XtraForm which becomes hard with a post cure.
Precision films for screen printers
Screen printers need lower and lower stencil profiles (EOMs) combined with low Rz. The best way to provide these is via MacDermid Autotype Limited’s range of film products. The latest innovation is Capillex CP and CX photostencil films which combine a very low profile with immense on-screen toughness. It’s suitable for CD printing and any other ‘Critical Deposit’ application.
The MacDermid Autotype Limited Digital Screen Printer
The MacDermid Autotype LimitedDSP is a software suite that provides the screen printer with many insights into the process. It contains 3D simulations of the screen, moire and PostScript calculators, an Rz simulator and the new Ink Transfer Modeller which reveals for the first time what’s really going on when you screen print. |
